Summary[edit]

Description

A dead fly to test macrophotography with a simple zoom (55-300mm) and a Raynox DCR-250 in front. The scale shows how small it is.

Une mouche morte pour tester la macrophotographie avec un simple zoom (55-300mm) et la Raynox DCR-250. La règle montre à quel point c'est petit.

If one is using the DA 55-300mm with the Raynox diopters, here are the magnifications you'll get. The results are how much mm I can see on a ruler. That allows me to calculate the actual magnification ratio.

DCR-150

@55mm, focused @infinity: 85mm on the ruler = 1:3.6, @MFD (1): 65mm 1:2.7 @300mm, @infinity: 17mm 1.4:1, @MFD: 13mm 1.8:1

DCR-250

@55mm, @infinity: 53mm 1:2.2 , @MFD: 42mm 1:1.8 @300mm, @infinity: 10mm 2.4:1, @MFD: 8mm 3:1

So to summarize :

You get between 1:3.6 and 1.8:1 using the Raynox DCR-150 You get between 1:2.2 and 3:1 using the Raynox DCR-250

The DA 55-300mm alone can go as low as 1:3.6 just about where the DCR-150 picks up at 55mm. That makes the DCR-150 more useful in practice for hand-held macro. But the 250 allows you to reach up to 3:1 magnification (but it's VERY hard even on tripod to focus and have any depth of field).

(magnification are calculated relative to K-5 sensor size which is 23.7mm wide)

(1) MFD = minimum focusing distance of the lens.
