Summary[edit]

Description Another of the Sika deer chills out in the shade on Miyajimacho Island. These deer are considered wild, but they are so dependent on humans for food (sadly, see a previous caption earlier in this album about that) that they have little to no fear of humans. They have in fact become quite bold and I saw a couple of animals startle tourists by trying to poke their nose into a bag of food the tourists were carrying. Miyajima is home to more than a thousand Sika deer- some call them the 'bowing deer' as they seem to bow before the visitor while accepting food from them or picking up something that has dropped to the ground. According to local folklore, the deer in Miyajima (also known as Itsukushima) were considered sacred messengers from the gods. Until 1637, killing one was punishable by death. They're still protected by Japanese law today, but not quite that harshly. (Hiroshima,Japan, Apr/ May 2019)
