Title
Annular brooch
Description
English: A decorated annular buckle frame, made of copper alloy. The frame of this brooch has been crudely made, the frame appears to have been deliberately made to look pitted. The decoration is not regular and it does not appear to have had any set design on the frame. The pin recess survives but there is no pin. Tiny traces of gilding survive of the front surface of the frame. On the reverse of the frame there are two grooves cut into the copper alloy opposite each other, it is unclear what the function of these two grooves would have been. Much of the original surface has been removed from the brooch. The surface is badly corroded. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina. This brooch is medieval in date, c. 1200 - 1500. A similar brooch frame can be seen in Egan and Pritchard, 1991, pp249-50, Fig. 160, No. 1311. Weight: 5.2g.
