John Dryden^ Minister of Agriculture : Dear Sir,—I have the honor to present to you my report of what has been done inthe San Jos^ Scale investigation during the present year, referring to the eflfort made tocontrol the pest, the increase and spread which has occurred, its destructiveness ininfested sections, the information gathered from abroad, together with such conclusionsas I am in a position to offer. Owing to the great increase and spread of the Scale which took place last year, somany large and valuable orchards being involved, destruction by burning became im-practicable. In accordance with your instructions of March 23rd, I at once proceeded to secure aquantity of insecticide material for treating the affected trees. Having previously con-sulted soap manufacturers in Toronto, Hamilton and St. Catharines, none of whom couldsupply the quantity required within the time remaining before the soap would have tobe applie
