ate have been carefully examined bycompetent foresters, who have made intelligent working plans under which thematured timber may be removed from time to time and a permanent, annualrevenue secured to the State whenever the present constitutional restrictions areremoved. And so, profiting by the lessons of the past, and encouraged by thesuccesses of the present, the great lumber industry of the State enters upon anothercentury of its existence with every promise that it will continne to add its full shareto the honor and prosperity of the Commonwealth. *The present tariff, enacted in 1897, puts a duty of $2.00 per M. feet on sawed pine, spruce, hem-lock, balsam, maple, birch, beech, elm, ash, and walnut; and a duty of $1.00 per M. feet on whitewood,sycamore and basswood. Cedar, when sawed, is admitted at 15 per cent ad valorem. On planedlumber an additional charge is made of 50 cents per M. feet for each side dressed; and 50 cents moreper M. for tongued and grooved boards of flooring.
