ilton County, New York, employed parties of four men each — a tallyman, two caliper men, and a man who ran the compass line and made a general descrip-tion of the territory gone over. Instead of the cord a chain was used, and eachcaliper man measured a strip half a chain wide. The strips were run in the samegeneral direction, a quarter of a mile apart, giving thus a measurement of one-twen-tieth of the whole forest. A separate tally was kept for each acre measured. Thatis, whenever the strips reached the length of ten chains a new tally was begun. Large forests may, in order to facilitate measurement, be divided into smallerparts by lakes, rivers, roads, ditches, etc., that may be present. Each part can thenbe measured by itself. In the measuring itself, due regard should be given to the following : 1. Before the work begins, and while it continues, one should see to it that themovable arm of the calipers is not too loose. 2. The calipers should be placed on the tree at right angles.

If, at the place of measurement, there is an extraordinary thickening or otherirregularity, the measurement should be taken higher or lower. 4. The dimensions should be read off while the arms of the calipers lie closeagainst the tree, and at this moment the caliper man should step close up to thecaliper bar. 5. The height at which it is decided that the measurements are to be taken mustbe held to strictly. It should be marked in some way on the clothing of the caliperman, by a button, for example. According to the investigations of Grundner, aGerman, a deviation of six inches higher or lower makes on the average a differencein the basal area of 1.05 per cent. When measurements are to be taken repeatedly,as, for example, in a standing experiment, a mark should be put upon the tree witha scratch-awl. 6. Ordinarily only one diameter measurement need be
