During the first and second years, therefore, forgepractice metal working, wood turning, bench work, and machineshop practice are all given to the same student, to test his powersand to discover what his special aptitude may be. The application of the elements of physics and chemistry to manualemployments is held steadily in view, and special methods of teachingemphasized. An abundance of practice in drawing is insisted upon frombeginning to end, and the reading and estimating of plans andspecifications is made a part of the business discipline of the depart-ment. Two years of manual training lead up to the third year of thiscourse, which is given to one serious craft, carpentry. The efforthere is within one year actually to acquaint the student with all thefundamental principles and processes of the carpenters trade, alongwith a good deal of experience in mill work, framing and stairbuilding.
