Milesstarted from Fort Supply toward the southwest to strike the enemy inthe direction of the Antelope hills, while a smaller body from NewMexico, under Major W. E. Price, moved down the South Canadian toassist him. On August 30 Miles encountered the Indians in force nearthe head of the Washita, and after a running tight, lasting several days,drove them out on the Staked plain, with a loss of Several killed,besides a considerable portion of their horses and camp outfit. A fewdays later the supply train in charge of Captain Wylhs Lyman, Fifthinfantry, was attacked near the head of the Washita. The men cor-ralled the wagons, and defended themselves for several days until reliefarrived from Fort Supply. The assailants were supposed to have been the Kiowa whohad recently stampeded from the Wichita agency (see the calendar1874-75; also Record., 4; War., 3). On September 26 and 27, 1874, Colonel (afterward General) EanaldS. Mackenzie, Fourth cavalry (MuiujomluHte, Xo index-finger, ouaccount of the loss of that finger), whom the Comanche already knewto their sorrow, with a detachment of his regiment, after repelling twoattacks, surprised a large body of Cheyenne and their allies in a canyonnear Eed river, Texas, destroying over a hundred tipis and capturingtheir entire camp outfit, with over fourteen hundred horses and mules.This was the severest blow the Indians had yet received.
