ly built by opentrench. Only a short portion of the latter road was builtby tunnel. In neither road was the shield method madeuse of, and considerable settlement took place on the sur-face over the tunnels of both roads. Some portions ofthese underground roads pass under crowded streets. Inbuilding the latter road (the Glasgow Central) especial painswere taken to prevent interference with street traffic incrowded thoroughfares, such as Argyle street. Openings onthe street were limited during week-days, according to thecontract, to areas 50 feet long and 17 feet wide, and the dis-tance between two consecutive openings was not to be lessthan 600 feet. Between the hours of 12 P.M. Saturday and5 A.M. Monday, traffic was shut off from the street entirelyat the points where work was in operation. The work dur-ing the week was mainly in putting in side-walls and takingout the core where the arch had been completed. On Sun-days the surface of the street was torn up in order to put onthe roof.

Second Annual Report. 29 Method used in Oonstructing the Underground Railway inParis under the Boidevard St. Michel and ContiguousStreets. This road was completed about a year and a half ago. Itsdesign and the method by which it was constructed are con-sidered admirable. The first operation was to relay the pipesand sewers on the sides of the street. A temporary pavedroadway, including a street-railway track, was then niiide ineach sidewalk, the latter being 22 feet and upAvards in width.A trench about 6 feet wide for one side-wall of the subwaywas then dug, and the side-wall was built therein up to theskewback for the arch. A similar trench for the other side-wall was then dug, and the side-wall itself was built up asbefore. As soon as the two side-walls were finished the earthbetween the outside limits of the two trenches was excavated,making a trench nearly 40 feet wide, down to the level ofthe intrados of the arch. The earth core was then roundedover and covered with thin plaster
