Of these by far the most important isthe production of sugar. Sugar and its by-products constitute about three-fourthsthe value of all exports. The sugar plantations are found along thecoast in the alluvial plain from the Pomeroon district to the Couran-tyne River and along the rivers for a few miles above where theyempty into the sea.
