I know it is hard and irksome sometimes,but dont give it up, and always obey your teachers.But I was going to tell you a story: — When I was alittle boy, somebody made me a present of a kite, and a pack-age of twine nearly as large as my head. As soon as thewind was favorable, I went into a field with a number of boysto fly my kite. Up it went, beautifully till almost outof sight. It pulled very hard, but we held on to the string.Now if we had cut that string what do you suppose wouldhave become of the kite ? I will tell you; it would havecome down of a sudden, and the fall would have brokenit all to pieces. Boys, you are just as that kite was,pulling away at the string, and fretting because you cantget your liberty; dont cut it, for you will surely comedown, and, like that poor kite, never be worth anythingafterwards. The exercises of the occasion were then concludedby a song by the school, after which the happy mul-titude dispersed.

The Cottage Grove School building, erected inthe fall of 1866, and first occupied January 2, 1867,is pleasantly located on Douglas Place, near CottageGrove avenue, in the centre of a large lot, 200 by231 feet, finely shaded by native forest trees. The building is of wood, two stories high, and thegeneral arrangement of school rooms and wardrobesis the same as in our full-sized brick buildings, aswill be seen by the accompanying plans.
