rdered by a row of short prickles. When newly hatched, theyoung soldier bugs may be frequently found in the curl of the commonelm-leaf plant-louse (Schizoneura Americana), and also the commonapple aphis (Aphis mali), busily engaged in devouring the lice. Weshould specially look out that we do not destroy their eggs, as those ofan enemy. The full-grown insect is shown in plate m, Figure 2.Plate in, Figure 3, represents (Erax-apicalis* Wied,) a fly that feedsupon grasshoppers and other pests, but I have never seen it inVermont. TIGER BEETLES. Cinci7idelidoe. The order Coleoptera contains very many friends, and the tiger bee-tles are especially so. Plate in, Figures 4, 5 and 6, shows a varietyof the more common of this group. They should everywhere receiveprotection. A larva is also shown in Figure 6. It is certainly necessary that a man may know his friends as wellas his enemies, that he may not use all alike in a universal hatred thatalways destroys, as opportunity offers. INSECTS. 251

These insects areto be found during the day under sticks and stones and under thebark of trees, from which places they go out at night to hunt for theirpj;ey. The larvae live in similar situations and are also nearly alwayspredaceous. The generalization is made by Packard that they aregenerally oblong, broad, with the terminal ring armed with twohorny hooks or longer filaments, and with a single false leg beneath.(Calosomas crutator, Fabr.,) shown at plate in, Figure 8. Accordingto Harris, this insect is known to ascend trees in search of canker-worms and similar insects. Another beetle of similar habits is (Calo-soma callidum,) shown at Plate hi, Figure 7. Mr. Glover, in the1855 report, figures a species of Harpalus, probably H. caligiiiosus,Sa)r. (see Plate iv, Figures 1, 2), and in the text refers to it as bei
