The researches of the Commissionreveal the fact that there is scarcely a county in the State in whichthis valuable form of historical material is not threatened withloss and destruction. Already fire has broken into the files ofevery one of the leading Detroit papers; and the reports receivedshow that the destruction of newspaper files is now going onthroughout Michigan. The Commission, therefore, feels it their duty to present the con-ditions in respect to the preservation of State archives, with theview of hastening the time when Michigan shall follov/ other statesin constructing a building for its records. In this connection it may be mentioned that Ohio has recentlycompleted, a simple, dignified and commodious building to con-tain the material collected by the Ohio Arcluieological and IiistoricalSociety.
