ollowed insome cases by limy mud rocks and in others by argillaceous cnes. These were both succeeded by a clastic series of both argillaceousand calcareous nature with one and sometimes the other elementin excess and occasionally with so much lime as to form an impurelime rock. The varieties varied in texture and followed each etherirregularly. Impure argillaceous muds predominate, and are inter-bedded with limy muds and grits of varying thickness, but oftenattaining several feet. Grits often reaching conglomeratic textureare frequent. In these, the larger particles range from the size of apin head through that of a pea to that of a walnut and larger. On the whole, the finer-textured members are more characteristicof the basal portions of the series and the coarser and gritty layersof a higher horizon. Such a series as has just been described isfolded in between the red slates of Matteawan and those south ofthe clay pits at Payes brickyard, and the members are exposed at Plate 17 74 00

The coarser, grittymembers, or conglomerates, were noted about midway between thestrikes of the two bands of red slates. The red slates suggest that they were formed under conditions ofregular exposure to the atmospheric influences, perhaps on extensivetidal flats or river deltas. It is probable that these rocks were formedon a gently subsiding sea floor which occasionally allowed for partialnonmarine conditions of sedimentation. The relative horizon of thered slates is indeterminate, but is probably not far from the baseof this formation. This is indicated by the geographical associa-tions with the conglomerate and their absence northwest of theWappinger creek limestone. North of Camelot, along the railroad track, almost to Pough-keepsie, crushing has a
