It is noticed that applications fromthe interior of the State have shown a considerable increase. With at least three hundred and fifty applications for admission,we have been able to receive only twelve patients into the hospital.The number of poor cripples, for whom much can be done in bothcity and State, and for whom no adequate hospital accommodationsexist, is as yet unknown, but it is safe to say that there are severalthousand of them. Hampered as we have been by a small and inadequately equippedhospital building-; overwhelmed with hundreds of applications, whichwe have been obliged to decline; lacking the room for a full corps ofassistants, and with overcrowded wards, we have nevertheless keptin mind the ultimate licnefit of those committed to our care; and theexcellent results obtained speak well for the resident officials whohave given much time and energy to the care of the patients—oftentimes at considerable personal inconvenience.
