Wright, he made ageologic reconnaissance of Portland Canal, in southeast-ern Alaska, which occupied him until about the first ofJuly. In the administrative work Mr. Brooks had the efficientaid of Mr. Gerdine, who supervised the topographicwork of the division and prepared all the topographicfield plans. Mr. Cleveland Abbe, jr., rendered inval-uable services in the critical reading and revision of themanuscripts which were submitted for publication, andin the absence of the authors looked after the text andmap proofs. In addition to this, he kept record of instru-ments and other property, and continued the cataloguingof the maps of the division, and during Mr. Brookssabsence in the field he had charge of the office force.
