Summary[edit]

Description

On 14 October 1888 author Katherine Mansfield (Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp) was born in Wellington. The daughter of a wealthy and socially prominent family, she was raised in Thorndon and Karori, which provided settings for some of her future stories. In 1908 she migrated to London, where she met fellow contemporary artists such as Virginia Woolf, DH Lawrence, and TS Eliot. While her body of work was relatively small, Mansfield is recognised as a pioneering short-story writer through her innovative use of modernist literary techniques. Although she was never to return to New Zealand, her connection to the country of her childhood repeatedly surfaced throughout her work, such as ‘The Garden Party’ and ‘At The Bay’. She died in 1922 from tuberculosis, and is buried in France.

Mansfield was similarly avant-garde in her approach to romantic relationships and had several affairs with both men and women, as well as two tempestuous marriages - the first of which lasted only a few hours. The brevity and breakdown of this marriage alarmed her mother Annie Burnell Beauchamp so much that she removed Katherine from her will. These images are taken from Annie Beauchamp’s probate, which is held at Archives NZ. It contains a codicil to her will made in 1909, in which Annie ‘revoke(s) all benefits and advantages given by my said Will to my said daughter Kathleen’.

Archives New Zealand holds many probate registers and files. Probate files contain the documentation required for the granting of probate on a will, that is, for the legal administration of an estate after the death of a person. Most probate files contain a variety of documents concerning: establishing the identity of the deceased, executors, and the processing of probate. More information on researching probates can be found here: archives.govt.nz/research/guides/personal-identity#probate
