cident, he was in a state borderingon collapse. There was evidence of fluid in the abdominal cav-ity, with moderate distention, which was more marked on theleft side; but there were no symptoms upon which to base apositive diagnosis as to the seat of the injury. When the abdomenwas opened, the haemorrhage was still going on. The spleen wasruptured, together with a large branch artery, which was bleed-ing at a point just before its entrance into the spleen. The bleed-ing was checked, the boy infused, and the spleen removed; buthe lived only thirty-six hours. Of the two complicated cases, one was operated on by Dr.Abbe. The injury was supposed to be on the right side of theabdomen, and an incision in that region disclosed one-half of thespleen lying in the right iliac fossa. Both the right and left kid-neys were also ruptured, the latter so severely that it had to beremoved. The spleen was also removed. The patient did notsurvive. NON-UNION OF RADIUS. 737 son a few weeks ago. A fracture of the pelvis was made out,with a large hsematoma in front of the bladder, which suggestedthe probability of a rupture of that organ. Instead of this, how-ever, a rupture of the deep urethra was found. Upon openingthe peritoneal cavity, it was found to be filled with blood, andupon introducing the hand a ruptured spleen was made out. Itwas deemed inadvisable to do anything more than give a salineinfusion, and the patient died a few hours later. Dr. Johnson said that if these cases can be seen early enough,or if the haemorrhage ceases, the spleen can be removed with afair prospect of success. Dr. Parker Syms said that four years ago he had a case ofthis kind in a boy of twelve. In that instance the fracture of thespleen occurred from indirect violence.
