The post was known in our early days as AUnited States Frontier Fort located at the forks of the Des Moines andRaccoon Rivers, at the present site of the city of Des Moines, Iowa. Lati-tude 41.32. Longitude 16.37 W. Washington. This article quotes quitefreely from contemporary official letters, and gives a clear and well-outlined,history of the old military post. Few, if any, of the men to whom it refersare now living. The frontispiece of the present number is a map of thepost, which we have caused to be engraved from a drawing also furnishedby the War Department.—Editoe of the Annals.
