The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer and Muhsin Ertuğrul.

Tasarladığı binanın kendisine hiç danışılmadan, dönemin eğilimi olan İkinci Ulusal Mimarlık’a uygun hâle getirilmesi, Balmumcu’yu mesleki anlamda olumsuz etkiledi. Caddeye paralel uzanan ve birbirini dik kesen iki kitleden oluşan binanın bahçesinde Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer ve Muhsin Ertuğrul’un heykelleri bulunmaktadır.
