One choking death-cry, and the deadbody hangs limp in the otters mouth, while the highwaymanswims away with his booty in triumph. The otter is one of the worst malefactors in the animalworld. His form is everywhere known, sharply distinct fromthat of any other beast of prey. Whoever has not seen him infreedom has possibly had occasion to observe him in a zoologi-cal garden or in a menagerie. In the shape of his skull, in hisuncommonly fierce bite, in the elongated, low-lying body, andin the short legs which tread with the whole sole flat upon theground, he resembles his cousin, the marten; but his head issomewhat more rounded than that of the marten.
