Title |
Anglo-Saxon button brooch |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy Anglo Saxon button brooch with traces of gilding still remaining. The obverse is complete. The reverse is undecorated, but the broken remains of the pin lug and the catchplate survive as small lumps. The pin lug and the catchplate have been arranged in a longitudinal alignment. No pin survives. A human face is set within an undecorated rim. The helmet is rounded and the brow almost straight forming a T- shape with the nose. The eyes are triangular and formed with straight lines. The cheeks are curved and narrow. The 'mouth' has a central indentation and the corners angle upwards. The artefact is generally a mid brownish-green colour. Similar brooches, one from nearby Alfriston can be seen in Avent and Evison, page: 82 ref: class Bii. This type of brooch dates from the Early Anglo-Saxon period, between circa 450-550 AD. |
