Description
Das Altarbild wurde bereits von Vasari (1568, IV, S. 385) erwähnt. Es wurde im Auftrag von Giuliano Scala für die Stadt Sarzana in Ligurien, an der Grenze der Toskana gelegen, ausgeführt. Raffaele Soprani (1674, S. 245) scheint Informationen über den wahren Auftraggeber, einen gewissen Benedetto Celsi, gefunden zu haben. Beide Namensheiligen des Auftraggebers, Benedikt und Celsus, sind im Bild zu sehen. Celsus links unten, an der üblichen Position eines Stifters.
