But— the Conductor began. I wont but, returned the Hippo. Im a Hippopotamus,I am. Not a goat. Have you paid your fare? Of course I haven't, returned the Conductor, because— Thats it! returned the Hippopotamus. Thats the wholepoint. Hes the one thats shy, and because we wont consent topay his fare out of our own pockets hes going to hold us up. I movewe squash him. But I say, roared the Conductor. Oh, pay your fare and shut up, growled the Polar Bear. Youbegan the row. Whats the use? Hear em quoting my poem, whispered the Poker to Tom. Ive taken his number, said the Flamingo. Its eight billionand seven. Hes trying to beat his way. Pay up, pay up, came from all parts of the car, and beforehe knew it Tom found himself in the midst of an angry group sur-rounding the Conductor, insisting that he should pay his fare. 78 Andiron Tales Who are you that you should ride free? demanded the Fla-mingo. The idea of servants of the company having greater privi-leges than the patrons of the road!

>&>, I haven't the money. On the Trolley Cloud 79 If you dont pay up right away, roared the Polar Bear, Illsqueeze you to death. And Ill sit on you, put in the Hippopotamus. I haven't the money, cried the Conductor, now thoroughlyfrightened. Borrow it from the company, said the Polar Bear, and ringit up. This the Conductor did, and a moment later, having reachedthe station, rang the bell, and the car stopped. All out! he cried, and the whole party descended. Who paid his fare, anyhow? asked the Flamingo. I didnt, said the Monkey. No more did I, said the Hippopotamus. The Kangaroodid, though. Didnt you, Kangy? Only once, said the Kangaroo, and that was the second time. Lets get away from this crowd, said the Bellows. Theyrenot honest. Right you are, said the Polar Bear. Theyre a very badlot. Come along; lets get aboard this toboggan, and leave embehind. Whereupon Tom and his companions, accompanied by thePolar Bear, stepped aboard the waiting Oscycle, and were soonspeeding down
