Summary[edit]
DescriptionAndesite Boulder at Manchester University-geograph-4363007.jpg |
English: Andesite Boulder outside Manchester Museum. In 1888, during the construction of a sewer on Oxford Road, an enormous boulder weighing more than 20 tons was discovered in glacial drift 28 feet below the surface at the corner of Oxford Road and Ducie Street. This boulder, consisting of ancient lava (andesite) is believed to have been carried by ice from its origin, Borrowdale in the Lake District, more than 80 miles away. It has been displayed in the University Quad next to the Museum ever since. |
