Summary[edit]

Description
English: Andesite from the Tertiary of Colorado, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

Andesite is a finely-crystalline textured, intermediate, extrusive igneous rock. It is the extrusive equivalent of diorite. It usually has a porphyritic texture, but can be aphanitic. Andesite is a type of lava and is commonly erupted from subduction zone volcanoes. This rock is from the Tertiary-aged Buffalo Peaks Andesite of central Colorado. The unit is over 550 feet thick, but the upper contact is eroded away everywhere. Published literature indicates that Buffalo Peak Andesite samples have plagioclase feldspar, hornblende amphibole, augite pyroxene, hypersthene pyroxene, plus minor minerals.

Stratigraphy: Buffalo Peaks Andesite, Upper Eocene or Lower Oligocene, ~34 Ma

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site at Buffalo Peaks (West Buffalo Peak or East Buffalo Peak), southern end of the Mosquito Range, west of South Park & north of the town of Buena Vista, far-western Park County, central Colorado, USA
