I do not mean to say that inthe seventies and eighties carriages still blockedAlbemarle Street, but if Mr. OShaughnessy wasunderstood to be putting the finishing touches tothe proof-sheets of his next volume there arose animmense excitement amongst all the other poets,amongst all the Pre-Raphaelite Circle and all theoutsiders connected with the Circle and all theconnections of all the outsiders. What the bookwas going to be like was discussed eagerly. So-and-so was understood to have seen the proof-sheets,and what the Athenceum would say, or what theAthenceum did say, excited all the circumjacentauthors quite as much as would nowadays thewinning of the Derby by a horse belonging to HisMajesty the King.
