Analemma, solar position at the same time each day, explains why earliest sunset and latest sunrise is at different dates.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Analemma, solar position at the same time each day, shown for a central European location (Graz, Austria) for the time 08:00 and 16:00.

The curves are a result of the changing speed of the earth on its way around the sun, as well as of the tilt angle of the earth axis.

The charts make it obvious, why the earliest sunset and latest sunrise happen at different dates.
