Title |
An incomplete copper-alloy, Colchester derivative, Polden Hill Roman brooch dating c. 70-150AD. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy, Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (after Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.I.c, plate 48) Roman brooch dating c. 70-150AD. The brooch is incomplete with the catch-plate and pin missing. The wings are cylindrical and appear to be undecorated. The bow is D-shape in section. The head of the brooch has a hinged pin and a cast-on loop. Above the head is an interesting moulding in the form of a stud with a crescent or lunate disc. The stud may originally have been enamelled but this does not appear to have survived. The brooch has a slightly pitted and abraded surface with a brown patina.
Length: 37.62mm; width of head: 18.62mm; thickness of bow: 5.69mm; weight: 8.8g |
