Title
An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy (brass) cosmetic set: a pair of tweezers and tooth pick dating to the 16th century.
Description
English: An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy (brass) cosmetic set: a pair of tweezers and tooth picks dating to the 16th century. The tweezers are constructed from two pieces of sheet copper alloy that are riveted together. The sheet metal is rectangular and expands at one end to form the open end of the tweezers and the rivet is attached at the narrow end. The broad end of the tweezers has a bevelled edge. The overall shape is distorted and the end of side of the tweezers is broken and missing. The rivet also attaches a smaller triangular piece of sheet metal which terminates in a point, presumable forming a pick in the toilet set. A further piece of sheet metal is also attached by the rivet, only the scrap around the rivet remains and the rest is broken and missing. This is probably the remains of an ear scoop.

Similar cosmetic sets are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991:377-8), the authors note the sets were found in deposits of the late 13th – 14th centuries. The design of the sets would have enabled them to fit into narrow etuis, similar to needle cases, rather than hanging freely.

Dimensions: length: 66.06mm; width at open end: 8.32mm; weight: 3.91g.
