Title |
An incomplete Medieval cast copper alloy harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Medieval cast copper alloy harness pendant, 14th century. The pendant is shield-shaped with a perforated loop on the upper edge orientated at 90º to the pendant. The upper edge of the loop has broken off. The loop measures 9.42mm long. The front surface of the pendant is decorated with a heraldic device of a raised cross moline or sarcelly (with the ends split and curved back) on a red back ground with a blue diagonal line over. This can be blazoned: Gules a cross sarcelly argent, overall a bend azure. Papworth (1874:612) lists these as the arms of Bennall, Benhalle or Frere based on 14th-15th century sources. The pendant measures 34.6mm long, 23.3mm wide and 1.42mm thick. It weighs 4.62 grams. |
