Title
An impression of a Medieval seal matrix.
Description
English: Medieval flat lead seal matrix, dating to the 13th century. It has been cast and then engraved. Only approximately half of the matrix remains.

The reverse of the matrix is flat and undecorated. The matrix was originally a pointed-oval shape, but only the lower portion remains. The break of the matrix is not recent as the surface of the break is the same colour as the faces of the seal matrix. The device is a fleur-de-lis. The legend reads [ ]FIL GALFRIDI LE MA[ ]. The first letter 'F' is not certain, but two horizontal bars are visible, and 'FIL' means 'Son of' which is found on seal matrices. It is possibly unlikely to be the end of 'SIGIL' when looking at the position of the word on the matrix, almost a quarter of the legend would be for 'SIGIL' which would be widely spaced, and then the rest of the letters of the legend are close together. The name 'GALFRIDI' is a Latinized version of Geoffrey, a common name in the 13th century. The matrix therefore may read '[ ] son of Geoffrey the [ ]'.

The matrix measures 20.83mm long, 27.37mm wide and 2.05mm thick. It weighs 5.82g.
