Title
An impression of a Medieval seal matrix.
Description
English: The object is an impersonal Medieval seal matrix, dating to the 14th century. The matrix has a hexagonally faceted conical handle. It is made from cast copper alloy and then has been engraved.

The stem or handle of the matrix terminates with a large oval loop. The die is circular, and has the device of a long-eared hare which is crouched on all fours. The legend starts with an asterisk and reads *SOHOV SCVT, a hunting cry for a hare. Dr. Malcom Jones (pers comm) comments... '"scut" is a late ME word meaning 'hare' (preserved in modern English as the technical term for the animal's tail).

The matrix measures 15.68mm long and the base is 13.78mm diameter. It weighs 3.46g. Compare SUR-59DDE5.
