green rushes, insects &c., and inautumn of berries, especially those of Empetrum nigrum. Anothermember of this genus, C. carulesce/is, differs only in having avarying amount of lead-coloured markings irregularly disposed overits plumage; and it has been suggested that this and the Snow-Goose may be, respectively, coloured and white phases of the samebird, like those that exist in the case of some of the AmericanHerons. There is a third white species, C. rossi, a very small bird. The adult has the quill-feathers black, greyish at the base, as arealso the coverts ; remaining plumage pure white, the forehead some-times stained with orange-rust colour; bill red, commissures black,nail whitish ; legs and feet red. Length : male 28-30 in., wing17-18 in. ; female 23*3-24 in., wing 15-16 in. The young bird hasthe upper parts dull brownish-grey with darker centres to the feathersof the back and wing-coverts ; under parts greyish-white ; bill black ;legs and feet lead-colour. ANATID/E. 595

THE RED-BREASTED f.OOSE.Berxicla rufic()LLis (Pallas). This small and richly-coloured Goose is a very rare wanderer asfar west as Great Britain, and almost all the authenticated specimensin existence have been obtained on the east side of the island. Thefirst recorded occurrence is that of a bird shot near London duringa severe frost early in 1776, and now in the Museum of Newcastle-on-Tyne ; while another, taken alive near Wycliffe in Yorkshire aboutthe same time, lived until 1785. One, killed near Berwick-on-Tweedin 1818, is in the British Museum (Natural History) ; and a fineexample sent from Maldon in Essex, on January 6th 1871, isin the collection of Mr. John Marshall of Taunton. Two aresaid to have been obtained in South Devon, and one in Norfolk;while the remains of a bird killed in Caithness are—or were—in theSinclair collection, now at Thurso.
