leaf-stems, each 3-flowered. Fruitcovered with hooked hairs. Rich woods. Our area. June-Aug. 12. G. latifolium, Michx. (Fig. 8, pi. 151.) Purple Bedstraw.Stem smooth, 1 to 2 ft. high, erect, branched. Leaves in 4s, lance-shaped,3-nervcd, very sharp pointed at apex, rounded at base, 1 to 2 in. long,common flower stems usually shorter than the leaves, usually more thanonco forked. Flowers purple. Dry woods in southern part of our area.Llay-Aug. 13. G. tinctorium, L. (Fig. 10, pi. 151.) Wild Madder. Stemerect, stifi, 0 to 15 in. high, branching, several times forked. Leaves in43, linear, i to 1 in. long, 1-nerved. Flowers terminal in dilFuse clusters, 2 or 3 in a lesser group. Corolla rather large, white. Fruit smooth.Damp shady places, throughout our area. May-July. 14. G. trifidum, L. (Fig. 1, pi. 152.) Small Bedstraw. Stemsweak, * to li ft. high, branching, mostly rough on tlie angles. Leavesin whorls of 43, rarely in Gs, linear, \ in, long.
