Stillanother method is the single-phase alternating-current system, which has the advantage that voltages as high as 11,000 voltsmay be used on the trolley line so that the current in the trolleywire is small. This means that power may be transmitted forlong distances before the voltage drop becomes too large. Thesubstations, if used, will be few in number and will containmerely the necessary step-down transformers. But on theother hand the principal disadvantages of the alternating-current system (Fig. 361) are that the alternating-currentmotors are heavier and generally less satisfactory than direct-current motors of the same horse power, and the alternatingmagnetic flux of the line causes interference with adjoiningtelephone systems. In 1896 the Baltimore and OhioRailroad first used electric locomotives (Fig. 362) to haultheir trains through the great tunnel under the city of Balti-more. Ten years later the New York Central Railroad electri-fied their New York terminal, and soon all the railroads run-ning into or under New York City were electrified. Here thelocal conditions of tunnels and congested traffic prohibited
