The equipment consists of an invertedrotary converter to change the direct current of the trolley to an alternat-ing current, a regulator to keep the voltage practically constant, and thewelding transformer. TRANSFORMERS 385 mounted on the station bus bar, may be used to measure veryheavy alternating currents. The primary circuit passes oncethrough the hole in the core and so is equivalent to a singleturn. Since the current transformer is always connected inseries with the high-tension conductors, it is often called aseries transformer. The ammeter is connected to the second-ary winding of the transformer. Such a transformer isdesigned expressly to keep the ratio between the two currentsconstant. For example, if the ratio is 300:1, then a five-ampere ammeter would really indicate 1500 amperes in thebus bar.
