One of the chief weaknesses of rural schools in the United Statesas a whole is due to the constant shifting of teachers from one schoolto another. EDUCATIONAL CONDITIONS. 33 teacher each year. In this respect Montgomeiy County is fortunate.All the teachers in the spring of 1912 reported the length of time inthe position they were then holding. The average length of time forthe entire county was four school years. The average is very high.It is partly due to a few teachers whose length of service has beenexceptionally long. Omitting these, the average tenure was approxi-imately three years. The average number of positions held by allthe teachers during the past five years was 1.6, which is low whencompared to averages for the United States. The average numberof years of teaching experience was 8.1. An inquiiy was made to determine whether the teachers lookedupon their teachmg occupation as a life work or not. Fifty-fivereported that it was their intention to continue teaching indefinitely;50 had definitely decided to give up teaching in the near future; and20, mostly of the younger group of women teachers, had not as yetmade up t
