nswering me ; but I wanted to know the worst rightaway, and made him tell me. He said I could nt goto-morrow nor on Monday, but I might be able to goin a week. I knew what he meant by his tone ofvoice when he said it. He meant that I have got tostay in the house all this vacation, if not longer, andnot use my leg any more than is possible. That is thesame as saying that I must sit or lie around and donothing. Oh, its a terrible disappointment, and so cruel afterlooking forward to this time for three months! I know you will forgive this mournful letter, and Ihope I shall be in a more cheerful mood by the timeyour answer gets here. Please write soon.Your loving Cousin. My dear E——: Papa has just said that if I studyup this week, and get all my lessons, besides those fornext week, I can go to Buffalo next Friday. I thinkI can get those lessons with that reward in view. One takes so much pains with a letter, one does notlike to feel that it has all gone for nothing. Madame de Sevigne.

Why did nt you go ahead and make it a letter, whenyou got so near to it ? And can you explain why Ididnt get it until Saturday when it was written Mon-day ? But wait a minute, — I 11 look at the envelope.Oh, I see now ! It was not mailed until Friday! Iwonder if you were absent-minded and carried itaround in your pocket all the week, forgetting to mailit. Or perhaps you wrote half of it on Monday, andthe other half Thursday or Friday. I cant thinkthat of you, though. At any rate, I feel highly honoredthat the first letter (I forgot, — I mean note ) youwrote on your new paper should be to me. I think your new pictures are just fine, and I thankyo
