DescriptionAmtrak fuel tender 400, 1978.jpg |
English: Amtrak E9A locomotive #400, converted to an experimental diesel fuel tender in 1978. Amtrak was facing $20 million in costs to rebuild 70 fueling points to new EPA standards. The Seaboard Coast Line modified #400 in its West Jacksonville shops, removing the prime mover and installing six 1350-gallon fuel tanks. It was coupled together with two F40PH locomotives, allowing them to haul the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle without any refueling stops. |
