Title
Ampulla
Description
English: An incomplete lead ampulla. The main body is almost circular; there is a short neck, and it is not clear whether this may once have been longer. There is a single remaining (well-defined) pierced lug; on the other side, a portion of the artefact is missing: this damage may have resulted from the original owner breaking it open to scatter the holy water it contained. One side may have some sort of decoration, consisting of a thick line, but there is no discernable design. The other side has been damaged and squashed, and has a deep mark on one edge which may have been made by a plough; along this line, the artefact is bent; this dent could alternatively have been made by a tool, on purpose, to ‘ritually kill’ the object. The surface is pale grey and pitted. All of the surfaces are worn, including the broken area around the neck. This artefact dates to the medieval period.
