nds of gardening are divided. In addi-tion, Cleveland has gardens on vacant lots andone, the Training Garden, conducted by the HomeGardening Association. At present, the work inthe last named is divided between the junior andsenior boys. It is, however, the intention of theassociation to develop a graded course of three orfour years, so that a boy may here or on a farm,which will later be connected with the garden, learnenough agriculture to earn his living as a truckgardener or be inspired to fmd his way to an agri-cultural college, if he wishes to study general orspecial farming. Already the association and itsfriends have rewarded one boy by a scholarship atthe Wooster State Agricultural College and expectto appoint him assistant in the Training Gardenbecause being city born and bred yet trainedin agriculture, he can attract and teach cityboys effectively. DIFFERENT KINDS OF SCHOOL GARDENS to develop a healthy brain, to prevent imbecility,for all thought has a motor side or element.*It is upon this demonstrated proposition that theeducational value of manual training is based.It cannot be too often repeated that the brainshould be trained in childhood not only by intel-lectual processes but by the development of thesmaller muscles, especially those of the hands, bythe constant requisition upon sensory and motornerves, and by the constant quickening of senseperception. The result is intellectual power. Itis psychologically sound, then, to propose handtraining for those mentally deficient, providedthat what is proposed is within the grasp of theirlow mentality. With some imbecile children tools might bedangerous to themselves or to their fellows; withthose less mentally deficient, the simplest formsof manual training may be undertaken providedthey require only such amount of thought orwork as shall gently and gradually stimulate thebrain.
