Summary
[edit]DescriptionAmerican troops in France passing British men resting by the roadside (3016335435).jpg |
English: Columns of American troops marching along a road, France, during World War I. A long column of American troops are marching, four abreast behind an officer, along a road. They are carrying full kit and wearing steel helmets. The road lies between low-lying fields which appear to be in grass. To the left of the road a group of British soldiers are standing and sitting on a bank of earth thrown up from the drainage ditch. The American troops were often called the 'Doughboys'. The origin of this is traced to at least the American Civil War and possibly to the Mexican-American War of 1846-47. Some people think it may refer to the 'doughy' appearance of muddy troops, others suggest that the buttons of early uniforms were shaped like dough balls. |
