They have proved usefulas an emmenagogue, and as a general stimulantand diaphoretic in rheumatism. They have alsohad some reputation as a diuretic in dropsy. The wood of the Red cedar is smooth, light,and very durable. Its alburnum is white, butthe heart wood of a beautiful red colour, whenceits name is derived. J. he Buck bean or Marsh Trefoil is one ofthose plants which are native in Europe andNorth America, with so little difference of struc-ture, in the two continents, that their specificidentity can hardly he doubted. I have com-pared specimens of the native, and foreign plant,without being ahle to perceive the least definahledifference, except in size ; the American beingsmaller. Yet, if we admit the statements ofbotanical writers, the plant flowers in England atleast a month later than it does in the neigh-bourhood of Boston, a circumstance not usual inother species of vegetables. The most spongy and boggy soils, which areinundated at certain seasons, and never whollydestitute of water, are the favorite situations of theMenyanthes trifoliata.
