X HIS tall and luxuriant plant is found in richsoils in the vicinity of water from N^ew Englandto Carolina, and westward to the banks of theMissouri. The most northern situation in whichI liave known it decidedly indigenous, is on tliebanks of tlie Quinehaug river near the southernboundary of Massachusetts. It is, however, cul-tivated in gardens for medicinal use much furtherto the north. It is a vigorous herbaceous peren-nial with stalks four or five feet high, havingtheir summits covered in July and August withbrilliant yellow flowers. Legume Uvo-valved.—^Thespecies Marilaiidica has eight or nine pairs of leaf-ets, which are ohlong-lanceolate, and mucronaie;an obovate gland on the petiole. Racemes accillaryand terminal; legumes linear ami curved. Class Becandria, order Monogynia. Naturalorders Lomentacece, Linn. Leguminoscv, Juss. The stems, Avhich grow in bunches and oftenattain the heiglit of five or six feet, are round,striated, and invested with a few scattered hairs.Petioles compressed, channelled above, bearingfrom eight to ten pairs of leafets, which are ob-long, smooth, somewhat hairy at the edges, paleon the under side, supported by short crookedpedicels, and mucronated with a rigid bristle atthe end. On the base of the petiole is a largeovate pedicelled gland, of a shining green, ter-minating in a dark point at top, which is some-times double. Each petiole is also furnished witha pair of linear-subulate, ciliate, deciduous stip-ules. The flowers grow
