Notwith-standing his activities as a retail pharmacist and the exactions onhis time in the conduct of a retail drug store, he nevertheless foundtime to publish nearly 100 papers, representing investigations of avery high order of merit. Tanret will long be remembered for hisstudies on the active principles of ergot and pomegranate bark. Hisname will also be connected with the test associated with his namefor the detection of albumin, peptones and alkaloids. Charles Tanret was born on August 10, 1847, in the village ofJoinville in Haute-Marne, on the Lorraine side of the boundaries of 266 Life and Work of Charles Tanret. (AmMTa°u%£garm- the Champagne. CHARLES TANRET pharmacist and took a great deal of personal interest in Tanret,inviting him to his home, directing his reading and instructing himin the science and art of pharmacy. His employer was a man ofmagnetic personality and so filled his young pupil and apprenticewith enthusiasm and with the possibilities of pharmacy that his sub- AmMTayUiJih9arm) Ltfe and Hr°rk °f Charles Tanret. 267 sequent work even astonished his old master. Young Tanret wasof an analytical turn of mind and after mastering the simple sub-stances of the French Codex, threw himself into a study of the mostcomplex compounds contained therein. He read diligently and soonfound out all that there was to know concerning the preparationsand chemicals which were dispensed in this pharmacy. At the age of twenty-one, he was looking around for a largefield and applied for an interneship at the hospital of Paris whichappointment he received.
