It was actually the work of Daniel Carl Solauder and of JonasDryander, in succession librarians to Banks ; the original specimens from whichthe descriptions were drawn up are incorporated in the Banksian herbariumwhich is now in Cromwell Road (British Museum (Natural History)). Thesecond edition of this book in five volumes, nominally the product of WilliamTownsend Alton, son of the elder Alton, was written partly by Jonas Dryander,who succeeded as Banks librarian after the death of Solander, and completedby Robert Brown, who became librarian when Dryander died in iSio ; the bookappeared in 1810-1813.—Mr. B. ^Novimberim*) LondoH Botatiic Gardens. 527 Curiously enough, it was also from Kew, the systematists strong-hold, that the movement originated which replaced the study ofSystematic Botany in our universities by that of other branches ofthe science, such as morphology, physiology and cytology; for thisresult came about chiefly through the influence of the Jodrell Lab-oratory, completed in 1876, and of the English translation of SachsText-Book of Botany, in the preparation of which the present Direc-tor of Kew assisted. Furthermore, it is of interest to record thatthe reaction which has become perceptible during the last few years,as well as the trend in the direction of ecological research, had itsorigin, not at Kew, but in the universities themselves. The workwhich has been accomplished in the Jodrell Laboratory is largelyphysiological in character, but cytological, morphological and ana-tomical investigations have also been actively prosecuted, as in-stanced by the epoch-making palaeo
