Fig. 20—First-floor plan Individuality of its own. The use of cement in the build- ing of the small country house at the present time is an advance, from an economic point of view, of the best and the cheapest kind of material of which a house may be built with satisfaction, and is an excellent substitute for wood. It not only makes a more permanent dwelling in which to live, but when you consider the expense of keeping a wooden house well painted and in good repair It will be found in the end the cheapest form of construction. That the archi- tect is giving con- siderable attention to this kind of house Is evident by the rapid Improve- ment throughout the country in the designing of the small house, con- structed of cement. That much can be done in relieving the cement house of Its monotony and se- verity, is also well demonstrated by the uses of which cement is now being made, In its different forms and colors. One of the principal charms of cement is that It can be molded into any form, and at the same time present a most harmonious and pleasing effect. Fig. 21 —Second-floor plan
