seems hardly necessary to go beyond into the pantry andservice rooms, yet the completeness of these parts is too pro- is a wood cornice and a cove below the ceiling. The woodmantel has facings of mottled white marble. Adjoining isthe morning-room. It is finished in quartered oak, withwalls papered in red stripes of two shades, one being verydark. There is a quartered oak wainscot and a white cor-nice. The curtains and furniture are red and gold. The library is a splendid apartment on the right of the halland is entered directly from it; it is thus somewhat removedfrom the other great apartments. In a sense it is library andbilliard room combined, since a billiard table stands in it.For the most part its walls are lined with bookcases, reach-ing almost to the tops of the doors. Above, the walls arecovered with leather, applied in large square panel-likepieces. There is a richly coffered ceiling in red gold. The Lofty Terrace Below the River Front is Upheld by a High Stone Wall, Handsomely Balustraded Most houses can be reviewed in a survey of the publicapartments on the first floor. This can not be said of Mrs.Shepards house. The suites of bedrooms that fill the secondand third floor offer quite as much interest as the great roomsbelow. The bedrooms are of various sizes, most of thembeing large, while Mrs. Shepards own room is actually im-mense. There is a wonderful variety and singular good tastein the furnishings of these rooms. Each is distinct, each isvery well done, and each has a charm of its own. The rangeof treatment varies considerably, the scale of decoration insome rooms being comparatively moderate while in othersit reaches a very rich climax. This is especially so with theMoorish room, furnished in the Moorish style, with manteland furniture inlaid with mother of pearl. The third storycontains a childrens suite, with a large playroom.
