The probablecause of degeneration in the covering epithelium is the rapidgrowth of the interglandular cellular tissue giving rise to decidualstructure and so causing stretching, flattening, and separation ofthe superjacent epithelium, which does not take part in the devel-opment. Glands.—The glands have increased in size, but I can find noevidence that new ones have been formed. They differ in size,shape, and arrangement from those in the non-pregnant state.One marked feature is the narrowing and obliteration of the por-tions occurring in the compact layer owing to the lateral pressureof the surrounding growing decidual tissue. The obliteration ofthe mouths of the glands is especially marked in the elevatedareas of the vera.
